Xscape, a female R&B group from Atlanta, Georgia, originated in 1992 with members Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, Kandi Burrus, LaTocha Scott, and Tamika Scott. Initially formed as a quartet, Tamera Coggins-Wynn was part of the original lineup but departed in 1993. Their breakthrough came when producer Jermaine Dupri discovered them and signed them to his So So Def label. Their debut album, “Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha” (1993), achieved platinum status, setting the stage for their rapid ascent in the music industry.
Following the success of their debut, Xscape released “Off the Hook” in 1995, featuring hit singles like “Feels So Good” and “Who Can I Run To?” The group’s third album, “Traces of My Lipstick” (1998), solidified their status as R&B stars with tracks like “My Little Secret” and “The Arms of the One Who Loves You.” Despite their immense popularity, Xscape disbanded in 1998, with members pursuing solo careers. Burruss emerged as a prolific songwriter, penning hits for artists like TLC.
Xscape briefly reunited in 2005 with a new member, Kiesha Miles, and had plans for a fourth studio album, “Unchained,” which never materialized. After disbanding again in 2006, the group reunited once more in 2017, marking their return with performances at the BET Awards and Essence Festival. However, Burruss expressed disinterest in recording new music with Xscape, leading to the formation of the subunit XSCAP3 by Tiny, LaTocha, and Tamika. Despite Burruss’s absence, XSCAP3 released an EP titled “Here for It” in 2018.
In 2021, Xscape participated in a Verzuz battle with SWV, reigniting interest in their music. Their renewed popularity led to a limited series on Bravo, “SWV & Xscape: The Queens of R&B,” which premiered in 2023. Despite the group’s enduring success, LaTocha Scott distanced herself from Xscape amid personal and professional disputes, focusing instead on solo endeavors in gospel music. As of 2022, the remaining members continue to perform under the Xscape name, maintaining their status as influential figures in R&B.
